Who we are
We are one of 12 regional boards across Queensland. The Metropolitan North School Sport Board was established in 1998 to act as an administrative body for school sporting activities in the North region of Brisbane.
Metropolitan North covers all schools, state and non-state, from the Brisbane River North to the North Pine River and from Moreton Bay west to Mt Glorious. We work with 143 primary and secondary schools with over 70,000 students.
Students with disabilities are included in primary and secondary teams.
What we do
The Metropolitan North School Sport Board is an operational unit within Education Queensland which supports the following 3 districts in the Metropolitan North School Sport region:
- Brisbane Central and West
- Brisbane North
- Murrumba
Core purpose
The Metropolitan North School Sport Board's core purpose is to focus on children and schools within the various education systems.
It supports the physical, intellectual and emotional well-being of young people, so they can be productive students and members of their communities.
This is created through the provision of comprehensive school sport programs. The board’s core purpose is to focus on children and schools within the various education systems.
The board facilitates, supports and leads the sport districts and sport committees in their development of sport education.
Mission
To co-ordinate and support appropriate quality sporting opportunities for all students in Metropolitan North regional schools.
Learning
The board, through its programs in school sport, provides new opportunities to learn. The representative program targets the gifted and talented students. The school sport programs also provide a safe, tolerant and disciplined environment that allows students to learn teamwork and correct behaviours in winning and losing. It also gives students the opportunity to develop good self-esteem and provides a platform for learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The inclusion of students with disabilities and remote/isolated students, is a function of the board.
Schools
The board contributes to the development of distinctive schools through supporting schools in the establishment of centres of athletic development. The board continues to establish useful working relationships with community sport bodies. These partnerships are important in the delivery of quality programs to schools and their students.
The school workforce
The board provides an avenue for teachers to develop their skills in coaching and team management. By providing competitions at the regional and state level and avenues to national and international level, teachers have an opportunity for professional development within a sequential system.
School services
The board contributes to school services that facilitate the work of schools and the learning relationship between selected adults and students. It provides financial management and accountability, policy advice and assists in the appointment of team management to representative teams.
Portfolio relationships
Since 1997 the board has offered its programs to the non-state school sector. It has put in place processes that allow for the involvement of both teachers and students from this sector.
